Classroom Project: How to Make a Friendship Bracelet

Objective

Students will learn to create a simple friendship bracelet using basic knotting techniques.

Materials Needed (per student)

  • 3 strands of embroidery floss in different colors (each about 24 inches long)
  • Scissors
  • Tape or safety pin
  • Clipboard or cardboard (optional, for securing the bracelet while working)

Instructions

Step 1: Prepare the Strings

  1. Choose three colors of embroidery floss.
  2. Cut three strands, each about 24 inches long.
  3. Tie all three strands together at one end, leaving about 2 inches of slack.
  4. Secure the knot to a clipboard or tape it to a desk.

Step 2: Start Knotting

  1. Separate the three strands.
  2. Take the left strand and cross it over the middle strand.
  3. Take the right strand and cross it over the new middle strand.
  4. Pull tight to create a knot.

Step 3: Continue the Pattern

  1. Repeat Step 2, always starting with the left strand.
  2. Continue this pattern until the bracelet reaches the desired length.

Step 4: Finish the Bracelet

  1. When the bracelet is long enough, tie a knot at the end.
  2. Trim any excess string, leaving about 2 inches.

Step 5: Wear and Share

  1. Tie the bracelet around your wrist or a friend's wrist.
  2. Trim any remaining excess string.
